Economic and market value

Safe investment

Whenever you invest there is a certain risk, because by doing so we are taking positions in uncertain scenarios. One of the variables that we consider when investing can change over time, which does not happen with land. Let’s not forget that the land maintains or increases its price and the harvest can always change.

Fast return on investment

A crop with low cost compared to other fruit trees, ease of handling and adaptation, day by day it is catapulted with a real development in terms of planting, the great point in favor that enhances its image over the competition is its low initial investment capacity at the time of its production.

To achieve economic progress in Spain and Portugal, it is necessary for agriculture to undergo profound transformations, including the new fruit alternatives that are becoming highly relevant. Hazelnut cultivation is an alternative that offers wide export possibilities. Therefore, we consider its rapid capitalization to be the first advantage.

Consumption and Production

Few Producers

The world production of hazelnuts is carried out in different zones by latitude and altitude. World cultivation is concentrated in limited areas of Europe, Asia and the United States.

Locating a crop in the areas closest to its ideal habitat is always a factor of competitiveness by reducing production costs.

Among the factors, the most decisive for the hazelnut tree are the climate and the soil. In the first case, the winter and summer temperatures and the accumulation of hours of cold and heat necessary to contemplate its annual cycle are determining factors.

Knowing the rainfall and its distribution over time is also essential and contemplates the irrigation needs. As for the soil, a neutral or slightly acidic pH, fertile soils, well drained and with a good content of organic matter will be ideal to favor the development of its root system, which is superficial. Both in Spain and in Portugal there are large geographical areas compatible with the cultivation of hazelnuts.

Mechanical harvesting

Unlike other high-density crops in which the harvest is done with mounting machines, in the case of hazelnuts it is totally different since the hazelnuts are collected from the ground with the fruits that have fallen naturally. It is fully mechanized, taking into account that the fruit should not remain on the ground for a long time exposed to agro-environmental conditions, so 2 or 3 passes are normally made with a sweeping machine that places the fruit in the center of the track, to then a vacuum cleaner loads the leftover fruit and other vegetables into the container.

High and stable prices

Turkey is the largest producer, which marks the evolution of the world hazelnut market. The price per kilo has reached €13.81 and has remained around this price over time.

World demand and consumption

The world consumption of hazelnuts follows a highly important trend from 424,000 to 497,000 tons in the last 4 years. This increase has been especially pronounced in China, a country that is progressively rising in the ranking of the countries with the highest consumption, and in Russia, both demographically very important countries with great growth potential. Hazelnuts and the products made with them occupy the first place in value of Chinese imports.

In European countries, demand is greatly aided by the value that consumers attribute to the well-being factors associated with their consumption and the sustainability factors linked to their production, but external factors also play an important role. Faced with this situation, the large commercial groups promote the installation of new plantations for farmers.
