Scientific name

The scientific name of the hoopoe is Upupa epops.

Family

The hoopoe belongs to the family Upupidae. This family is monospecific, i.e. it contains only one recognised species, which is the hoopoe.

Location

It is found over much of the European continent, especially in southern and central Europe during the breeding season.

Behavior

It nests in tree cavities or walls, the female incubates the eggs and both parents feed the chicks. Populations from colder regions migrate south in winter, while those from warmer areas tend to be resident. It unfurls its crest and emits a foul-smelling liquid to deter predators.

Feeding Habits

It feeds mainly on insects and their larvae, but also eats spiders, worms and small reptiles. It forages on the ground, using its long bill to probe the soil and leaf litter for prey.

Reproduction

Hoopoes nest in tree cavities, walls or cliffs. The female lays 5 to 7 eggs and incubates them for 15 to 18 days. Chicks are fed by both parents and leave the nest at approximately 26-29 days after hatching.
